The End of My World

My world comes not to an end
when the sun ceases to shine.
My world comes not to an end
when god is no longer divine.

My world comes not to an end
when acid rains and toxics storm.
My world comes not to an end
when hearts are cold and the asphalt warm.

My world comes not to an end
when all humans die.
My world comes not to an end
when death comes by.

My world keeps on spinning
in spite of all
but it will end
when Nature Falls.

My world ends
when the flowers cease to bloom.
My world ends
when trees above me no longer loom.

My world ends
when the birds' songs cease.
My world ends
with the spread of disease.

with the lion's roar.

when the wolves howl no more.

when buildings conquer the sky.

Entered for the Darksiders contest.

I deeply feel connected to nature. I hate being in cities because I feel like they are an alien planet upon which I do not belong. I truly believe that man will be his own destruction if he does not change his ways.

My apocalyptic world, then, would be a world without nature, without the wind and the rain, the trees and the sun. It would consist of colorless asphalt, cement, and smoke stacks. In this picture I wished to illustrate holding onto life in one last attempt in my collapsing world.

Painted on Corel Painter Essentials 2 with a 5x5 waccom tablet. Painted mainly with pastels, and I used a woodcut effect on the buildings. The sand alone took me four hours. In total, the picture took me about ten hours to make. I did reference various pictures of Seattle and Detroit for the buildings, supplied by ABC news web site. For the desert I referenced different pictures of the Sahara desert.

Apologies for the grainy quality. For some reason converting the file from the Raw format to JEPG messed it up a bit :S
