In response to the recent D.A. Poll:
"Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has ever known"- Oscar Wilde
True OR False?
I do consider art to be an intense mode of individualism, but to consider it MOST intense mode is like those "always" and "never" questions on multiple choice tests that always signified the statements were false. I believe that there is no one "most" intense mode, because the term "intense" can take on a different meaning for each person or each media of expression. Intense may mean that they put their whole heart and soul into their expression, or it may mean that the impact their expression has is intense, or it may refer to the feeling they acquire while doing whatever mode of expression they feel strongest in. There are numerous, uncountable ways that a person can express him/herself, and to name one of them the most intense of them all is biased. Someone may not be very indulgent in art, but more so in leadership; for them art would not be their most intense mode of individualism but the way they lead a team would be. For an artist, though, art may be the most intense. It may vary from person to person, and from how intense is defined.
If we broaden the expression, though, and expand art to include more than just the audio and visual media to the common expression that "Life is [a work of] art," then we can say "All life is Art" but "Not all art is life." This would expand the poll to mean: "Life is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has ever known," which I would consider to be true. For life, surely, must be much more intense than lack of it. I wouldn't know- my entire existence upon this planet has been in life so I can only conclude just so.
